The onion skin allows you to see previous and next drawings and images in the same element in the Exposure Sheet window so that you can more accurately animate a character or object as it changes from frame-to-frame.
For example, let's say that you want to draw a character walking across the scene.
To draw a convincing walking cycle, you can draw two keyframes and then use the onion skin to draw a keyframe in-between those positions. The onion skin will help you draw the transitions between movements more accurately.
Drawings in the onion skin appear paler in the Drawing View window so that you can distinguish the current drawing from the reference drawings.
